Gary Chapman - "I often meet Christians who are upset because God hasn't answered their prayers--at least not in the way they had hoped or on their time schedule. Being patient with God does not mean believing that he is still in process but believing that he knows--better than we do--that we are still in process. Being patient with God means trusting that he is sovereign and loving. It means believing that his love will not allow him to answer requests that don't line up with his ultimate purposes."

Tony Evans - "Becoming a mature believer takes time. You don't become mature overnight. A baby doesn't hop, skip, and jump into adulthood. The Bible tells us that maturity is a process: 'He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus' (Philippians 1:6). In a very real sense, this maturing process will go on for the rest of your natural life, but there is a point you can reach where you are consistently responding to things from a spiritual perspective."

Tony Evans - "Spiritual adulthood is the process of God bringing us to the place where we are consistently living life from the perspective of the Spirit rather than the perspective of the flesh. Maturity in Christ means you normally look at and react to things from a spiritual perspective. God wants us to get to this place of maturity, to live as we were created to be. But many of us are not yet living the Christlike life, which means we are immature. If we are living like that, we are children, tossed here and there by every new fad that comes along. "

A.B. Simpson - "A life was lost in Israel because a pair of human hands were laid unbidden upon the ark of God. They were placed upon it with the best intent to steady the ark as the oxen drew the cart carrying it along the rough way. But they touched God's work presumptuously, and they fell paralyzed and lifeless.
Much of the life of faith consists in letting things alone. If we wholly trust an interest to God we can keep our hands off it, and He will guard it for us better than we can help Him. Rest in the Lord, and wait patiently for him: fret not thyself because of him who prospereth in his way, because of the man who bringeth wicked devices to pass (Psalm 37:7)."SELAH!

Oswald Chambers - "Worldliness is not the trap that most endangers us as Christian workers; nor is it sin. The trap we fall into is extravagantly desiring spiritual success; that is, success measured by, and patterned after, the form set by this religious age in which we now live. John MacDuff - "'Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, you blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you, from the foundation of the world.’ (Mat 25:34)
What if instead of ‘You blessed ones, Come,’ He had said rather, ‘You blessed ones, Go, to a kingdom I have provided for you. Angels, conduct from My presence this ransomed people I have redeemed. Furnish them with crowns and thrones in that distant celestial city; and since I am to be no longer with them, be you to them a holy brotherhood -- make them partakers of your joys!’
How would every face droop in sadness! Heaven would have a blight passed over it. Its ransomed worshipers would exclaim, ‘Our thrones are denuded of their glory -- our crowns of their luster, O Savior, without You!’
But it is not so. His very opening declaration dispels their dread. ‘Come!’ Wherever your heaven is, it is to be a heaven with me: we are to share our crowns and thrones together. ‘Him that overcomes will I grant to sit with Me on My throne’ (Rev 3:21). ‘Enter you into the joy of your Lord’ (Mat 25:23)."SELAH!

Arthur Joyce - "A funeral is always a sad occasion. The music that's played is usually reflective and quiet. But the funeral for Jesus who died on the cross, was just the beginning of an awesome event. . . the resurrection! Jesus was the firstfruits of the resurrection. Because Jesus lives, we who have placed our hope in Jesus and accepted the sacrifice made for our sins on the cross, will live. We shall one day be with those saints, who have gone on before us, that will gather around the Throne and sing our songs of praises to our Savior, Jesus Christ!
What a day that will be, when our Jesus we shall see; when I look upon His face, the One who saved me by His grace; when He takes me by the hand and leads me to the Promised Land; what a day, glorious day, that will be!"SELAH!

Selah Subscriber - "Thursday was the day that Jesus celebrated the Passover with his disciples, I guess they would be just waking up now, while Jesus was probably already awake and praying for them and Himself as He knew what was about to happen. They would break fast together and begin their walk into the city, perhaps stopping here and there to minister and teach. Today, in history, is the day He instructed His disciples to go and find a man carrying the water jar and follow him to a place with an upper room where they were to make preparations for the Passover meal He was to have with them. Tonight would mark the beginning of Jesus’ suffering, His unlawful and unjust trial which led to His sacrificial death for all mankind. That's something to think about it.
(Thank you, Selah subscriber, for helping me have something to think about when I forget to think! May this day be filled with thoughts of wonder that Jesus loves us so much!)"SELAH!

John MacDuff - "Is it your daily prayer that He [the Holy Spirit of God] may come down in all the plenitude of His heavenly graces on your soul, even "as rain upon the mown grass, and showers that water the earth?" You cannot live without Him; there can be not one heavenly aspiration, not one breathing of love, not one upward glance of faith, without His gracious influences. Jesus made very clear that if we are to follow Him, we must give up our possessions. Even though they may have plenty of Bibles in their homes for spiritual nourishment, and even though the church--a spiritual supermarket--is right down the street, these Christians suffer from spiritual malnutrition. Adrian Rogers - "A little girl's mother had died. Her first night apart from her mother, she felt alone in the darkness of her bedroom and left it to sleep with her daddy. They tried to sleep, but unable to see her father's face, the little girl said, "Daddy, it is so dark. Is your face toward me?"
"Yes, darling, my face is toward you."
"Daddy, you love me through the dark, don't you?"
"Yes, sweetheart, Daddy loves you through the dark." The little girl drifted off to sleep. And that strong man slipped out of bed, fell on his knees and prayed, "Heavenly Father, it is so dark. Is Your face toward me?"
The answer came from heaven, "Yes, My child, My face is toward you."
"Father, do You love me through the dark?"
"Yes, My child, I love you through the darkest night." And the father joined his precious daughter in much-needed sleep.

Sometimes the greatest treasures are discovered in the darkness. Darkness is not always the work of the evil one. It's also one of God's ways to teach.
The stars that hang like chandeliers in the velvet canopy of space are only seen in the darkness. Stars don't "come out" at night; they're there all the time. Conversations that revolve around the other person's needs or demands make it hard to develop true fellowship. These one-sided relationships can lead to us feeling used and manipulated. We give Him our laundry lists of prayer requests without spending any time praising Him, thanking Him for our past blessings or seeking a relationship with Him. Greg Laurie - "Simon Peter was so full of pride. After Jesus told His disciples that one of them would betray Him, meaning Judas Iscariot, Peter said, "Even if all are made to stumble, yet I will not be" (Mark 14:29 nkjv). But Jesus answered, "Assuredly, I say to you that today, even this night, before the rooster crows twice, you will deny Me three times." Peter insisted, "If I have to die with You, I will not deny You!" Wow. Peter was saying, in so many words, that Jesus didn't know what He was talking about.
The Bible says, "Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall" (Proverbs 16:18 nkjv). The devil is going to size you up and try to find your vulnerability. Then, that is where he is going to hit you. So don't ever say, "I maybe will fall in this area, but I will never fall in that one." You could fall even there. Even in the place where you think you are the strongest you could fall. And so could I. We need to know that about ourselves. That is why we need to flee temptation and not leave a forwarding address. And we need to remember that every temptation is an opportunity to flee to God."SELAH!

Though all of these things have their place, here is what it comes down to: if we are true believers, there will be fruit, or evidence, in our lives to show that.

The Bible is clear--if we want to know God and His Son, Jesus Christ, He has been revealed in Scripture. His Word is not just a to-do list of spiritual chores, or an informative historical document; it is the way we can know Him and show Him to an unbelieving world."

John MacDuff - "The best Christian has not always a joyous day. Our sins make sorrows needful--our lack of watchfulness may bring disquietude and doubt, and, instead of "rejoicing in the Lord," our hearts may be filled with despondency and gloom. Christian! if you have not this joy "abiding" in you now, you have cause for alarm; for, be assured, it is suspended, not from any lack of love on the part of your Savior, nor from any forgetfulness of you by the Holy Spirit, but, because you yourself have become less watchful, in guarding the citadel of the heart. Christian joy can only be realized, when Christ reigns there, alone and uninterruptedly."

A.B. Simpson - "Pray on, beloved. You are planting seed in heavenly soil, and some day your rapturous soul shall embrace the answer. Suffer on, patient soldier of the cross. It may not be given to you to serve; it may not be given to you to preach the Gospel; it may not be given to you to do the work for which you would gladly give all the world; yours is to stand bravely, truly, in the ordeal of pain, misconstruction, irritation, uncongenial surroundings in the household, in the business office, in the place of terrible temptation. Be true. You are sowing to the Spirit, and some day you will reap the amaranthine flowers and fruits of glory. You shall have your crown. Nothing that the Spirit breathes can ever die. Nothing that the Spirit plants can every perish. Sow on. Weep on. Wait on. Hold on. It may be weeping now, it will be rejoicing by-and-by. It may be sowing now, but it will be reaping by-and-by."

Elisabeth Elliot - "Life is full of things we can't do anything about, but which we are supposed to do something with. "(Christ) himself endured a cross and thought nothing of its shame because of the joy." This is a very different story from the one which would have been written if Jesus had been prompted by the spirit of our own age: "Don't just endure the cross--think about it, talk about it, share it, express your gut-level feelings, get in touch with yourself, find out who you are, define the problem, analyze it, get counseling, get the experts' opinions, discuss solutions, work through it." There are two ways of getting out of a trial. One is simply to try to get rid of the trial, and be thankful when it is over. The other is to recognize the trial as a challenge from God to claim a larger blessing than we have ever had. We should greet it with delight as an opportunity of obtaining a larger measure of divine grace.

J.M. Njoroge - "Augustine prayed, "You have made us for Yourself, and our hearts are restless until they find their rest in You." We are finite creatures, created for a relationship with an Infinite Being, and no finite substitute can ever meet our deepest needs. Trying to meet our real needs without God is like trying to satisfy our thirst with salty water: the more we drink, the thirstier we become. This is a sure path to various sorts of addictions.
But when we are properly related to the True Shepherd who calls his sheep by name, loneliness is infused with great hope as we, with Abraham, look "forward to the city with foundations whose architect and builder is God" (Hebrews 11:10). We become members of God's extended family. Day by day, we learn to trust God as we travel with others along a heavily trodden path that never disappoints. Friends and relatives may desert us, but we are never alone. We may grieve, but never like those without hope. We have peace and joy within, and even in our own hour of need, others can still find their way to God through us. The alternative is a crippling sense of isolation and alienation within a worldly system whose offerings, however sophisticated and well-intentioned, can never arouse us from spiritual death."SELAH!

Think about our own perspective: when there is a crisis with a family member---a child is rushed to ICU; your father has a heart attack; your sibling is experiencing depression---what is the first thing that believers often say in these circumstances? “Well, I guess all I can do now is pray.”
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard that in these past few years; I’ve said it myself.

The ministry of the church, if it is to be healthy, must always be firmly committed to both dimensions of the biblical mandate, that we may be faithful to Christ Himself. If we reject either the ministry of personal redemption or of mercy to the afflicted, we express "unbelief.""

Stephen Davey - "My friend, if you think you deserve God’s love, even to the smallest degree, you will never feel totally secure in Him. You will live in perpetual fear that you might do something undeserving of His love and, if that is the case, then you definitely will!
Don’t be afraid. This is the amazing beauty of God’s love toward us, that “while we were still sinners, He died for us.” The truth is, there isn’t anything you can do that will ever change His mind. His love for you is the same yesterday, today . . . and forever!"SELAH!

John Barnett - "We are wired to complain about life, but praise redirects our thoughts towards the goodness of God - He forgives our sins, heals our diseases, redeems us from death, crowns our lives with love and compassion, satisfies our deepest desires, and gives us His joy. As believers we receive all this undeservingly. No matter how hard life's journey, we can each count our blessings - past, present, and future."

John Barnett - "Praise is saying thank you to the Lord for each facet of his divine nature we see through His Word; and seeing with the eyes of faith all the marvelous works that God has done. The longer we practice this our inward attitude will become an outward expression of praise. When we praise God for who He is, we experience Him through that worship."

John Barnett - "The presence of God brings life and hope to even those who by every other measure should be hopeless. Anna (Luke 2:36-40) lived and walked in hope and saw God's Hand all about her life. She was willing to be what God wanted her to be - even if it's not much by others estimation! She was a "nobody" to everyone except to God."

Woodrow Kroll - "If Luke had never written his Gospel, we wouldn't have the story of Zacchaeus who saw an opportunity and seized it. You know from the story that Zacchaeus was intent on seeing Jesus--and the meeting changed his life. You can read all about it in Luke 19:1–10.
Here's the lesson I learn from all of this:
When God knocks on the door, we need to be ready.
We need to live each day with clean hands and a pure heart ready to seize each moment. Luke didn't regret living that way; Zacchaeus didn't regret it; and neither will you."SELAH!

David Jeremiah - "God has clearly revealed His will for your character in Scripture: We are to manifest the character of Jesus Christ. Our best checklist for God's will for our character as a Christian is Galatians 5:22-23. There Paul mentions nine character qualities of the heart: love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. If you would like your next steps to be within God's will for your life. . ., then pray for these Christ-like qualities."

James Boice - "When a person is at peace with God judicially and is experiencing increasingly in his own life that peace of God which transforms him and gives him tranquility even in the midst of great emotional turmoil and misunderstanding, then there is a firm foundation on which to overcome those interpersonal tensions that upset families, churches, cities, governments and the world."

James Boice - "If Christmas means anything, it at least means this - that God has not forgotten His people. Do you sometimes feel that God has forgotten you? Perhaps you have prayed for something and have not received an answer, at least not the answer you were waiting for. This can be a very trying experience. But it does not mean that God has forgotten. It is just that His plans do not run on our timetables. Be patient! Trust Him! I have known people who have had deep and fervent prayers answered after the better part of a lifetime has gone by - prayers for the salvation of a son or a daughter, prayers for success in some worthwhile endeavor, prayers for reconciliation with an erring wife or husband. God did not forget! And God has not forgotten you!"

James Boice - "The birth of Christ itself teaches us of God's love; for God loved us so much that He became man in order to die for us. It also teaches us of God's power, for an incarnation is beyond our ability even to conceive, let alone to bring into being. In the birth we see God's wisdom. We learn of His mercy. We see His disposition to use little things, to exalt the humble and to subdue the proud. We see His grace."

James Boice - "Celebrating Christmas can . . . take the form of pondering it, for Mary "treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart" (Luke 2:19). This . . . goes beyond amazement as an attempt to understand it or figure it out. It implies a diving beneath the surface. It involves an effort to enter into the heart and counsels of God. So do that. Spend some time at Christmas thinking over what you do know of God and trying to understand the ways of God more fully."

James Boice - "The Bible tells us that the birth of Jesus was unlike all other births in that Jesus existed before birth as the second person of the Godhead and He became man, not to provide us with a sweet story to tell children each winter or even as a theme for our greatest musical compositions, but in order to grow to maturity and then to die for our sin as a means of our salvation. Greg Laurie - "Sometimes God allows hardship so He can be glorified through it. Many times we see God answer our prayers and do amazing things in the lives of people. Sometimes God may be using hardship in our lives to prepare us for the future. Our life experiences can be used by the glory of God to help others. And God, in His amazing knowledge, can work all things together for good to those who love God and are the called according to His purpose. Sometimes we ask God to take something away, but He says, "No, I am going to work through it.""

For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s” (6:19). When we seek to fulfill the purpose for which God has created us--to glorify Him, to honor Him, and to bring Him pleasure--then we will find happiness. It doesn’t come from seeking it, but from seeking Him. Our life is found in proper balance."

Rather, He is your all-knowing, yet all-powerful Father in heaven who can envision what you will be when it is all said and done. God can look at you and can see what you will become before you have actually become it. We look at ourselves and say, “I don’t get it. This doesn’t look like a perfect person. This doesn’t look like a work of beauty.” But you are a work in progress. It is a process that doesn’t happen overnight. It is going to take all of your life on Earth. A.W. Tozer - "The past is forgiven, the present is in God's keeping and a thousand bright promises give assurance for the future. Yet we are sometimes terrified by the adversary. It is entirely possible to reach a place in grace where nothing can panic us. We can have an understanding with God about our yesterdays, our today and our tomorrows. The fear of death and judgment goes out of us as the true fear of God comes in, and that fear has no torment but is rather a light and easy yoke for the soul, one which rests us instead of exhausting us."

A.W. Tozer (1897 - 1963) was a modern day prophet, and a key figure in The Christian and Missionary Alliance. His legacy reaches through time and has impacted countless millions. A prolific author and pastor, Tozer was known for his emphasis on the deeper life movement. His message, informed as it was by A.B. Simpson the founder of The Alliance, brought the missionary call to a massive audience.
