Oswald Chambers - "God does not keep a man immune from trouble; He says - "I will be with him in trouble." It does not matter what actual troubles in the most extreme form get hold of a man's life, not one of them can separate him from his relationship to God. We are "more than conquerors in all these things." Paul is not talking of imaginary things, but of things that are desperately actual; and he says we are super-victors in the midst of them, not by our ingenuity, or by our courage, or by anything other than the fact that not one of them affects our relationship to God in Jesus Christ. Rightly or wrongly, we are where we are, exactly in the condition we are in. I am sorry for the Christian who has not something in his circumstances he wishes was not there."

Bayless Conley - "Take some time today to search your heart. If you have lost your cutting edge, stop swinging an empty handle and just going through the motions. Be honest and admit you have lost that edge, determine where it fell, look to the Master, listen to His voice, take responsibility, know that the cross of Christ is completely sufficient to restore you, and then take hold of what God is doing to restore your edge."

Greg Laurie - "When we are facing some kind of need, the place to start is prayer. It has been said that if your knees are knocking, kneel on them. Are you facing a conflict right now? Selah Subscriber - ""So what do you do when a child starts hollerin' or callin' for you?" he asked. "You come runnin'!" was the reply.
What parent hasn't experienced at some point the desperate calling from a child, "Dad! Dad! Come quick! I need you!" Or had their child cry out when hurt or in distress, "Mom! Help!" Maybe there were no words involved, only a blood curdling scream. What did the parent do? Sit back, relax, and wonder what was going on? NO! The parent ran as quickly as possible to their child's aid.
Our loving heavenly Father doesn't ignore the desperate cries from His children either.

Ed Young - "There are nine filters through which decisions and actions should be run, executive coach Brad Hays tells leaders. The first is God Himself, and the second is God’s Word. If the action doesn’t glorify God and line up with what Jesus would do, it should be screened out. If there is no biblical support for the intended behavior, then it should be eliminated. That requires that a man or woman have God’s Word stored up inside, and treasured as the most valuable standard for decisions and behaviors."

Greg Laurie - "Idols in our hearts can cause God to refuse to listen to our prayers. An idol is anything (or anyone) that takes the place of God in our lives. Clearly it can be a sinful thing. But it also can be a seemingly good thing. For example, we can make an idol out of a career. There is nothing wrong with a career, but if it is more important than God, then it has become an idol. We can make an idol out of a relationship or out of a husband, wife, boyfriend, or girlfriend. If they are more important than God, then they have become idols. We can make an idol out of money. We can make an idol out of a possession. We can make an idol out of just about anything. And if we have idols in our hearts, then God will not hear us."

John Barnett - "From God's Word we can see just a glimpse of how important Jerusalem and the region of Mt. Moriah are to the Lord.
These 40 acres are only a short distance from Calvary itself. This spot, holy to the Jews and to God, is Jerusalem! And, amazingly, this one spot is the only spot in Jerusalem still controlled by Gentiles.
"Behold, I will make Jerusalem a cup of drunkenness to all the surrounding peoples, when they lay siege against Judah and Jerusalem. And it shall happen in that day that I will make Jerusalem a very heavy stone for all peoples; all who would try to heave it away will surely be cut in pieces, though all nations of the earth are gathered against it." (Zechariah 12:2-3 KJV)
So according to the Bible, Jerusalem is the center of redemptive history; and Jerusalem is also the place where human history will end. All of that is attached to just this one spot, in one city called Jerusalem. God says that Jerusalem belongs to Him, don't divide it, don't harm my people or I will harm you!
We should pray for the peace of Jerusalem, which is a prayer for Christ's return to right all wrongs, and set up His Kingdom!"SELAH!

Charles Swindoll - "When you drive down the road and you see the sign, "Speed Limit 35 Miles an Hour," that's a precept; there's no give or take. If the sign reads, "Drive Carefully," that's a principle.
When it comes to the spiritual life, those who are after God in their hearts care as much about the principles as they do about the precepts. And when they come across a precept that is clearly delineated, they say, "As I look at my life, I see where it's not like that precept. I need to bring my life in line with it.""SELAH!

What an epitaph! Not, "I found David to be a great warrior," or, "I found David to be a faithful shepherd," or, "I found David to be a brilliant king"--none of those things. Oswald Chambers - "Always keep your life measured by the standards of Jesus. Bow your neck to His yoke alone, and to no other yoke whatever; and be careful to see that you never bind a yoke on others that is not placed by Jesus Christ. It takes God a long time to get us out of the way of thinking that unless everyone sees as we do, they must be wrong. That is never God's view. There is only one liberty: the liberty of Jesus at work in our conscience enabling us to do what is right.

"Most Christians have some "thorn" which they cannot extract, which is a daily trial, and which wounds deeply and painfully. If God sends us a thorn, then no one but God can remove it! And if God sends it, it is always sent in love. It is . . . to prevent some evil, or to prepare us for some good. If it makes us pray, if it drives us to the Lord's throne, if it humbles us in the dust, if it endears the promises, if it makes us long for heaven, if it teaches us deeply our need of Christ, then it is a great blessing! Better to be wounded by the sharpest thorn, than be allowed in ease, health, and prosperity to wander from the Lord!""SELAH!

John MacArthur - "The passions of a person's heart will come out in his prayers. If you examine what you pray for and find you are praying only for your needs, problems, questions, and struggles, that is an indication of where your heart is. If you pray infrequently, briefly, and in a shallow manner, you have a cold heart because prayer is not an inner desire. The call to the duty of prayer will not overcome a cold heart because prayer is an internal compulsion not fulfilled by conformity to an external standard. Lack of prayer doesn't mean that a person is merely disobedient; it indicates selfishness because of a cold heart."

New Testament Christians who understood their position in Christ and His position in them, were able to rejoice even in the midst of trials and persecutions. Greg Laurie - "Happiness is so important to us as Americans. . . It is also a hot topic today. . . The Bible talks about happiness as well, but it defines it in an altogether different way than our culture does. When we read the word "happiness" in the Bible, it is speaking of something that is self-contained. In other words, you can experience happiness regardless of your circumstances. The happiness the Bible advocates does not come from what you have. It isn't dependent on whether things are going well. It comes from who you know. James Russell Miller - "Daily duty in the common relations of life is as much part of a true consecration as are praying, reading the Bible, and attending church services. If the heart be given to Christ, the whole life is holy. We do not live two lives -- one religious and one secular -- after we become Christians. We are always to do God's will, and it is as much his will that we should be diligent in business as that we should be fervent in spirit."

When a man is harsh, cold, unfeeling, unkind, and rude and rough in his manner, no one speaks of his fine spirit. When a woman is loud-voiced, dictorial, petulant, given to speaking bitter words and doing unkindly things, no person is ever heard saying of her, "What a lovely disposition she has!" She may have many excellent qualities, and may do much good, but her ungentleness mars the beauty of her character."

Yes, we can learn to follow it. It comes naturally to none; it is a lesson that must be learned. Yet it can be learned.
Many people seem never to understand that they must learn how to live. They suppose that they were sent into life just as they are to go through life, and do not realize that there are a great many things in them that need to be changed, many that require to be made over altogether. It comes naturally to no one to live well, to live ideally. We have many things to overcome, faults to correct, undisciplined power, to bring under control, hindrances to subdue and change into helps."SELAH!

A.B. Simpson - "If you would abide in Christ you must cultivate the habit of always recognizing Him as near, in your heart of hearts, so that you need not try to find Him, reaching out to the distant heavens and wondering where He has gone. He is right here; His throne is in your heart; His resources are at hand. There may be no sense of God's presence, but just accept the fact that the Spirit is in your heart, and act accordingly. Bring everything to Him, and soon the consciousness will become real and delighteful. Do not begin with feeling--begin with acting as though He were here. So, if you would abide in Christ, treat Him as if He were in you, and you in Him; and He will respond to your trust, and honor your confidence."

It wasn't long before I was snapping at my wife and our children, choking down my food at mealtimes, and feeling irritated at those unexpected interruptions through the day. Before long, things around our home started reflecting the pattern of my hurry-up style. It was becoming unbearable.
I distinctly recall after supper one evening the words of our younger daughter, Colleen. She wanted to tell me about something important that had happened to her at school that day. She hurriedly began, "Daddy-I-wanna-tell-you-somethin'-and-I'll-tell-you-really-fast."

If you and I are honest with ourselves, it's not always easy to have the patience and trust to wait for God's perfect timing. God's grace is often best experienced when you have to wait on him. And that's because when you wait on him, you have nothing but him in which to hope. Os Hillman - "Paul desired a career in the building industry. Early in his career, he was working with a large ministry to help direct several of their construction projects.
As the projects were completed, Paul was asked to stay on for future projects. To keep him busy he was given a number of jobs - one of which was cleaning toilets. He recalls getting down on his knees each day and complaining to the Lord, "Lord, I'm a college graduate!"
Discouraged, Paul told the Lord, "I will not leave here until You promote me. Please give me contentment with my circumstance."
Paul felt totally forgotten by God. A few months later, Paul received a phone call from a man in the Midwest who owned five successful businesses who wanted to interview Paul for a job. This came as a total surprise to Paul. As he drove to the interview, he told the Lord, "I only want your will in my life, nothing else. I am content to remain obscure for the rest of my life if I have You. You must override my lack of experience for me to get this job."
The owner of the company asked Paul a surprising question: "If I asked you to clean a toilet, what would you do?" Paul sat there, stunned. He wanted to burst out laughing. Paul assured him that he would simply pick up a sponge and start cleaning.
Amazingly, Paul was hired even though other candidates were more qualified. After several months of success Paul asked his boss why he hired him. His boss replied, "Paul, I still have a large stack of applications from people who wanted this job. Do you remember the first question I asked you in the interview? I asked each one the same question. You were the only one who said he would clean the toilet. Paul, I am a wealthy man, but I grew up dirt poor. I clean my own toilets at home. I can't have people running my businesses who are too proud to clean a toilet."

It is only when that knowledge is used in the heat of battle that you will know the reality of what you've learned intellectually. Otherwise, it remains only an exercise in spiritual gymnastics that yields little fruit."

Tony Evans - ""[If] My people who are called by My name humble themselves and pray and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, will forgive their sin and will heal their land" (2 Chronicles 7:14).
God will deal with a nation that turns its back on Him. If a culture wants to be free of God, He will let it have that freedom. But freedom from God brings dire consequences. Pagans do not normally turn to God when things get rough. But this Scripture isn't addressing pagans; it is addressing "My people who are called by My name" (v. 14). The people who are supposed to pray for their nation are God's covenant people. In the Old Testament, His covenant people were the Jews. In the New Testament, the covenant people are the church--the body of true believers who have accepted Jesus Christ as our Sin-bearer and Redeemer."SELAH!

It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled under foot by men. You are the light of the world . . . Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven" (Matthew 5:13-14, 16).

Tony Evans - "God's people have been called to penetrate society. Of course, evangelism is always first because without forgiveness of sins, anything else we give a person is temporary. We have been called first and foremost to win people to Christ. But after a person receives Christ for eternity, he must represent Christ in history. Christians must give out hope; no earthly institution offers real hope for the world."

In even the worst situations there's always a reason to give thanks. There was a man who needed his dress pants ironed. While his wife was ironing them she burned them. The man began to get angry, but then he paused a moment to think about it. He realized he could thank the Lord that his leg wasn't in that pair of pants when they were burned!"SELAH!

And if we make our own inability a stumbling block or an excuse not to be obedient, it means that we are telling God that there is something which He has not yet taken into account. Every element of our own self-reliance must be put to death by the power of God. Ed Young - "The best way to avoid diving into the pool of regret; the best way to make the right decisions is to ask ourselves the right questions. As you go through the decision making process, look at each option with 'intense' eyes. When you are intense about your decision making process, you will gain the insight that allows you to see what is obscure to the rest of the world. . . . ask yourself if your decisions are going to reflect what you have learned from your past; if your decisions are wise considering your present conditions; and if your decisions are the best options to get you where God wants to take you. Get in line with God and you will be able to see the right answers to life's multiple choice test."

Stephen Davey - "I received an unwanted surprise in the mail not long ago. At first I didn't understand why someone was sending me pictures of my Ford F-150, but it suddenly dawned on me that I had received a notice from the. . . Police Department. My beloved town had installed cameras at key intersections that were designed to take photographs of drivers in the act of running red lights. Doesn't technology just warm your heart? It seems that I was one of those drivers . . . and I was looking at the proof! Frankly, I was embarrassed by the whole thing. I had broken the law and someone else had seen me do it. It wasn't a very good feeling. . ..
But that got me thinking: what if we were to go to our mailbox tomorrow and find a surprise letter filled with snapshots of all the things we had done the day before, including facial expressions and captions of the words we had spoken. I wonder how many of the photographs would bring us embarrassment or chagrin.
The Apostle Paul encourages us not to 'grieve the Holy Spirit, by whom we have been sealed for the day of redemption.' The truth is, wherever we go we take God's Spirit with us. Whatever we say in private, He hears. Whatever thoughts we think that no one else can see, He sees. I imagine we must grieve Him often.
Unfortunately, we don't have the motivation to stop sinning because we see our sin caught on camera. Frankly, there aren't cameras powerful enough to capture the gossip, pride, and rebellion that can escape our lips and occupy our hearts every day. But God sees it all . . . and it grieves His heart.
So, let's start today by praying that God will open our eyes to see what He sees and give our hearts a sensitivity to even the smallest transgression that might otherwise slip by unnoticed. "SELAH!

Stephen Davey - "Salt is different from sugar in that it can create intense thirst, prevent decay, cleanse, flavor, and preserve, but never sweeten. Now, I'm not suggesting that Christians shouldn't be sweet--that's an obvious pursuit.
However, in 2 Timothy 3:12-13, Paul says: 'Indeed, all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will be persecuted. But evil men and impostors will proceed from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived,' reminding the believer that the world will want to be rid of us. Christ says the same thing in John 15:20, when He claims, 'If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you; if they kept my word, they will keep yours also.' Being salt is a lot more dangerous than being sugar!
Just as salt can draw attention to food, Christians can draw attention to sin. The world hates being held accountable. Our message only tastes good to those who wish to be cleansed from sin and preserved from everlasting death, not to those who hate God. We make them thirstier for a happiness they can't find, and more aware of the sin they try to hide. No wonder the world prefers something that tastes sweet . . . a message that's sugar-coated.
At the same time, the world needs salt even though it doesn't want it. Through our ministry as saltshakers, many will come to the knowledge of the truth."SELAH!

Dan Darling - "I sense in my generation of men a love affair with entertainment, the all-out pursuit of fun. And it's crippling families, weakening churches, and causing community breakdown. Paul told young Timothy that part of his calling was to 'endure hardness as a good soldier.' There's nothing in 1 and 2nd Timothy about 'fun.' This is not to say Christians must always be dour and can't enjoy the wonder of all that God has for us. It is not to say we shouldn't set aside time to just do nothing. But to make fun our goal? This is destructive. It's immature. It's abdicating our responsibility.
If I could give one word of advice to young people I would say this: 'live life to the fullest, but don't make pleasure your idol. Fun will only get you so far. Hard work, dependence on God, and growing up will take you much farther.'"SELAH!

Dan Darling - "Wake up every day and surrender that day to the Lord. Toss aside expectations of normalcy and comfort. When we do that, we relieve ourselves of the stress and expectations and we open up the storehouse of Heaven for spiritual blessings. There have been many days lately when I've felt life was out of control. When things just didn't go the way I needed them to; when problems arise. The natural reaction is to get angry, to try to protect our lives from such terrible things. But the spiritual thing to do is accept each problem as a God-ordained cross and to set aside our desire for comfort and 'lose ourselves' in God's total control. So surrendering your life in service to the Lord in an altar call is a good and great first step. But having the discipline to yield to the work of the Holy Spirit each and every day is even better."

Unknown source - "Contentment and positive outlook exists in us because of the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit. As a result, we are always to think about things that are true, noble, right, pure, lovely, admirable, excellent, and praiseworthy (Philippians 4:8). Those whose hearts have not been filled with the Spirit of God will find it harder to combat the mind tricks and temptations of Satan (see Matthew 15:19). Simply remember that the condition of your heart determines the condition of your thoughts. Allow the Spirit of the Lord to consume your heart and thoughts so that you can live your life positively."

Dennis Rainey - "On a rainy December day in December 1925, U.S. Army pilot Carl Crane was flying a congressman's son back to Washington, DC, when he became disoriented in a thick expanse of clouds. He was 8,000 feet over Detroit. With no gyroscope on his instrument panel to tell him his rate of turn, he didn't know if he was flying level with the earth or was banking into a free fall. Soon, he had swooped into a spiral dive and had lost complete control of the aircraft.
But attempting any rescue move was a gamble. If he tried to level the wings, he was just as likely to roll upside down as right side up. If he tried to raise the nose, he might simply drive the plane more sharply into the ground. Finally, with his altitude shrinking to under 1,000 feet, he caught sight of the sign for the Statler Hotel. He had just missed clipping the top of it. He now had only seconds to pull up. And with the lights of the buildings giving him guidance and perspective, he righted his plane and found his way to the Detroit River, which he followed back home, 'shaking all the way.' For us, the words of the Scriptures are like the lights of Detroit were to Crane on that misty night. They are divine points of perspective that give us our true bearings in every situation. They explain why we behave the way we do--and which way to turn when we've lost our way. If we will follow the Scriptures like the pilot followed the river, we will be led to a safe landing. The trip may be bumpy. There may be some jostling during the flight. But the way will be made plain. God's Word will guide us home."SELAH!

Gary Chapman - "When we know that God is loving and just, we don't have to understand his ways in order to be at peace in the midst of life's stresses. We can accept that God operates on his own timetable. As the British hymn writer Frederick William Faber wrote, 'We must wait for God, long, meekly, in the wind and wet, in the thunder and lightning, in the cold and the dark. Wait, and he will come. He never comes to those who do not wait.'"
